Day 5 in the Big Bad Ischl House….

Apologies for not posting this yesterday. I could have, but I was feeling a bit low on and off during the day and it might have ended up being all doom and gloom and since that wouldn’t be an accurate reflection of the day as a whole, I decided to delay writing. Good call, as predictably feeling better – or at least a little more perspective – today. 👍

I think yesterday I had an overload of reading stuff and feeling worried about loved ones living in the UK where it just seems terrifying to us already in lockdown, that so much social interraction is still taking place. There was also some bad news for dear friends of ours and you just feel so useless that you can’t even dash over and give them a hug when they need it most. 😔

I’ve been watching the rising figures in Italy as a barometer and seeing that a decline in their figures is still not happening yet, despite the lockdown and ultimately, how that translates to us and the length of time our business will be in this situation. The figure of 3 months is being bandied about and indeed, Kurz said yesterday that the lockdown is extended to the 13th April, minimum. It’s scary stuff.

Generally, I did a lot of faffy stuff yesterday, bits of this, bits of that. Things like going over the whole house disconnecting appliances that aren’t needed right now – tv’s, lights etc in the guest areas so that they aren’t using up electricity needlessly, even on standby. Emptying out the guest fridge of beer, wine, soft drinks and unplugging it. And no, I didn’t drink it all, tempting as it was! 😆 It was all a bit sad really, but necessary to make savings wherever possible in these times.

Anyway, more positive things… I was busy planting lots of seeds for vegetables and flowers for the garden. Having turned Room 4 into a temporary greenhouse, I now have lots more capacity for seed trays! 😁 I find growing things very satisfying, exciting watching little seedlings appear for the first time, nurturing them through, planting them on and of course, eating them at the end. Home grown veg really does taste so much better! Hopefully I will have more than enough seedlings to pass around too… or more specifically, leave in trays at the bottom of the drive for friends and neighbours to help themselves to. Maybe performing annual ‘dawn raids’ on Landhaus Fay will become a thing for others… who knows?! Now there’s an amusing thought! 😂

We had been expecting a decent start to the day with rain around midday, but it never came and we had another beautiful day. The thermometer was over 20 most of the day (even in the shade) so Mark continued with his epic mission and was very happy to have completed the real gutsy part of the work today. I can’t believe he’s got it all done so quickly, he’s worked so very hard out there – bravo Mark! 🙌

He’s all ready now for his celebratory bonfire, having gained the permission of the Feuerwehr to have it and also spoken to the neighbours to warn them and get their OK too. Another of the rather nice rules in Austria is that you need the permission of the Fire Brigade to have a bonfire and there are restrictions governing size, layout and when you can actually stick a match to it i.e. not now when the sun is shining and people are enjoying their gardens, but wait for the weather to deteriorate, then you can.

We both ended the day tired, achy and slightly pink in places from the sunshine (well, OK.. just me… Mark just looks at the sun and goes brown… grrr!!) Can’t say I was expecting to put aftersun cream on in March, that’s for sure! 😂

From Saturday, the weather is definitely deteriorating, so it will be time to turn our attentions indoors and maybe chill a bit too. Apparently we are going to go from 20+ degrees to highs of 1 in the day, -7 at night and snow…. one extreme to another! I love the weather in this country… it’s never boring! 😆

Have a lovely day everyone and stay safe xx 😘

Tomato plants coming up nicely – should be enough to go round 👍
Experimental tomato plant seedlings – using slices of a tomato that was in the fridge. I’d seen it on one of those ‘useful’ FB video clips, but it actually works! 👍
Beautifully warm today! 🌞 An unexpected bonus to have an extra day of sunshine. 😁
Seed planting production line 👍
The accumulated compost heap is cleared!!! Woohoooo!!! Well done Mark – that was a labour of love! 😁 You wouldn’t believe just how much work went into completing this.. amazing effort sweetheart! 🙌
Little more progress on edging straightening and cleaning/replacing of the stone path. Ran out of day and weather, so another ‘to be continued…’ 😉
