Day 11 in the Big Bad Ischl House…

One thing that has changed for us a bit is that we seem to have fallen into a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time and waking early. Normally, when we have a couple of days off (with no breakfast to make), we slip very quickly into later nights and lie ins. No idea why it isn’t happening this time, but it is rather lovely to wake early, get up and know you have so much extra time in the day. It is odd though, I’ve always had more of a night owl biorhythm than an early bird, but for some reason this situation has changed all that. Not a bad side effect in the overall scheme of things 😁

Mark – my hero – has spent the day ski servicing. The day?? I hear you ask! But yes, we appear to have accumulated a few skis each of our own and then there are the pairs that live here on a permanent basis, whilst their owners visit them every now and then πŸ˜‰ If they’ve been used extensively, then they all get done. Usually accompanied by a couple of beers and loud music, ski service day is quite a cheery event in this house!

I spent the day doing various bits of cooking, making cottage pie.. which is brave cos the last time it was a complete disaster… but thankfully it turned out ok, not perfect but at least edible πŸ˜‡

This winter I got into making crystallised ginger and we had exhausted current supplies, so it was time to top up the stocks. Surprisingly easy and quick to make and with some rather useful health benefits, particularly at the moment! One of the real winners is the byproduct of a good amount of ginger cordial. Mixed with a dash of honey and hot water is a lovely, warming and comforting drink, with some properly good health benefits to boot! One of the best things about the recipe is the top tip to use a teaspoon to scrape the ginger rather than a knife… who knew? Sooo much easier! πŸ˜†

Aten and I (who were both feeling a little antsy) toddled off out for a walk this afternoon. Jack, who was perfectly happy to spend some time with Dad and β€˜helping’ with ski servicing, has a little problem with his harness at the mo and I need to further modify it. Aten was an absolute angel, walking beautifully to heel and loving a bit of one on one time. Just a walk around the village and into the woods nearby, but it was lovely and something of a rarity for me to spend time especially with just him. On our way back, the bus driver stopped especially and opened his window to tell me what a beautiful dog he was.. isn’t that lovely? Made my day!

Stay safe everyone xxx

The laundry room gets repurposed as a ski servicing room once a year, at least πŸ˜‚

Hard at work, music blaring = happy husband 😁 😍
Peeling ginger with a spoon… light bulb moment! πŸ’‘
Supplies temporarily topped up – love this stuff!
Starting the drying and crystallising process.. takes a day or two to complete for any kind of decent storage life, but tastes great already πŸ‘
Bridge over the river gorge.
Never possible to really show in a photo how deep this section is, the sound of the water pounding down over the steep falls are quite impressive!

The woods are full of spring flowers 😁
Beautiful pup – I know this cos the bus driver told me – appreciate it’s not immediately obvious from the face he’s pulling πŸ˜‚
Skis serviced βœ…
Nicky’s version of cottage pie. Probably not the most attractive, but it was ok.. not amazing, but ok. I think… πŸ€” πŸ˜‚
Skis returned to storage in newly painted boiler room βœ… βœ… βœ… 😁
