Day 23 & 24 in the Big Bad Ischl House….

(Tuesday, 7 April 2020 and Wednesday, 8 April 2020)

I’m sorry, I’ve been a bit lax in writing my updates the last few days. Truth to tell, the weather has been so beautiful that we’ve been furiously getting jobs done in the garden, so I’ve not had so much of a chance to sit and write. Oh, and a bit of sitting in the last of the afternoon sunshine with a beer too, so it’s not all work and no play, just in case you were worrying 😉

There’s a full moon at the moment and it’s a huge one! It’s so bright at night, it’s really quite beautiful but with just an iPhone, almost impossible to photograph. Helped along no doubt by the incredibly clear skies we are experiencing at the moment – a stunning deep blue in the day and crystal clear at night. I’m sure the lack of pollution from cars and planes (I can’t remember the last time I saw a con trail in the sky!) is enhancing this. The skies are often clear here at night but we can’t ever remember seeing the stars to bright and clear. 😁

As beautiful as the moon is, it does cause a couple of problems, one being that we have a velux skylight in our bedroom… immediately above the bed, so with a moon this bright, the room is flooded with moonlight. Again, beautiful, but not so practical for sleeping. I suffer from very occasional insomnia, it was a good while before I worked out that it was almost always only for the duration of the full moon. It turned out Mark is the same, so we’ve both had a couple of disturbed nights sleep on the trot. It’s kind of nice though, that even though we are not sleeping properly, there is no pressure attached to it, like you feel when you’re working. If we’re tired the next day, then it doesn’t really matter at the moment.. consequently, we haven’t really been tired the next day – go figure! 🤷‍♀️

We’ve both been doing various jobs around the place, Mark has been working hard on completing the separation of stones from dirt and treasure hunting for rubble in the old chicken run and I’m happy to announce that he has finished Le Drain Francais- Ta Dah! And very smart it looks too! We won’t know if it works or not until the next heavy downpour but we have all our fingers and toes crossed that it will solve the water seeping into the garage issue.

I’ve been doing a bit more gardening and odds and sods. I sorted out the strawberry bed, which I repurposed from a kids sandpit a couple of years ago. Last year I was too slow covering them up with netting and the birds got the lot. I won’t be making that mistake again! I dug up all the old plants, separated out the younger ones and replanted them. I also made a mistake and planted them too close to each other last time, so hopefully they will be easier to harvest this year. 🤞

The weather has remained beautiful, clear blue skies and really warm – Wednesday the thermometer was reading 31 degrees when it was partially in the sun. It was certainly hot to work in! Mark has continued to turn brown at the drop of a hat (as he does every year), whilst I, frustratingly, turn various shades of pink before finally going a much paler shade of brown. My legs look like two bits of white cotton hanging out of my shorts, whilst Mark just looks at the sun and goes a gloriously healthy colour… it’s not fair!! 😂

In case this is all sounding a bit too perfect, I should mention that the weather is due to turn again after the weekend, so we are trying to fit some things in before the change comes. 👍

Stay safe everyone xx

End of Day 23 and the majority of the smashed up hard core is in and waiting for the pebble covering.
